Search Marketing is simply online advertising using search words or phrases, primarily on Google and Yahoo! Typically, you decide on key words and phrases that potential customers would use to find your products online, and spend a predetermined amount to have your ad turn up when those words or phrases are entered into either search engine. Your daily or monthly budget dictates how many times your ads are shown.
Both Google and Yahoo! use the same ad format, which includes a small amount of text and a link to your website, and both use the same key metrics like ad impressions and click-thru rates (CTRs) for measuring success. While it may seem like a straightforward service, getting good results depends on having the in-depth knowledge, training, and experience to understand how to set up and operate effective campaigns. A good mix of technical and business experience and having the time to work on a campaign can also make the difference between success and failure.
Point One Media clients running Search Marketing campaigns are seeing an average 40 percent increase in traffic to their websites. While CTRs generally average between one and three percent, some clients are getting over four percent response rates, which is exceptional. Two of our Search Marketing clients can even tell when their daily ad budgets run out because phone calls and emails slow right down (typically around noon each day). Another company increased the daily visitor count by 100 percent by getting 300 new potential buyers to the site everyday of the campaign.
There are tricks to running a good campaign: following a good marketing plan, having a highly focused campaign, setting the appropriate budget, and changing the campaign on the fly all help to increase the browser-to-buyer ratio. While running a good campaign will deliver a lot of new potential buyers to the website, the onus to close the sale is still on you. Having a professional easy-to-use website, a good product or service, great customer service, and competitive prices are all critical to closing the sale.
